Travel Tips for America’s National Parks

The great wide-open expanses of America’s National Parks are calling and it’s time to answer. But what do you need to keep in mind to have an epic trip?

With these tips, you’ll be on your way before you can say “Red, White, and Blue!”

Plan your trip well in advance. Think you’ll be able to snag a room at El Tovar, located a mere 20 feet from the Grand Canyon’s South Rim? You’ve got another thing coming. In order to get those prime accommodations, you’ll need to plan nine months to a year ahead of time.

Choose the right time to go. With over 60 parks located over the contiguous United States, as well as Alaska and Hawaii, the seasons and weather can vary wildly. Additionally, not all of the parks are open year-round. You will also want to consider the type of experience you are hoping for. Looking for a quiet and relaxing time? Skip summer and go during the spring or fall instead.

Invest in the proper gear. A backpack instead of a suitcase. A large water bottle. Hiking boots. (Be sure to break them in before you go!). All of these can go a long way toward making your trip easier.

Make friends with the Park Rangers. Think of them as your park concierge. They know the ins and outs of the park, like where to eat a picnic and where to find that perfect sunset view.

Stay away from the animals. Seriously! These are wild animals who do

not care about the number of views your Instagram feed gets. They are dangerous and can move so much more quickly than you can imagine. Do not cross the barriers placed by the park. If you really want that “perfect” image, instead of getting closer, get a telephoto lens.

Work with a travel advisor. Most people think travel advisors only do trips like cruises. The truth is we can help you with a tour of the National Parks also.
